The Fluff Report: March 2013

March 27, 2013

Sorry I've been MIA over the last week. We literally sold our house in 48 hours this past weekend and as of now, have no place to go {except Mom's}. I'm certainly not complaining. There are good problems to have and this is definitely one of them.

A bad problem to have is short, stumpy lashes. I'm more of a long, lush lashes look kinda girl. I don't have the steadiness to apply falsies so I rely on my mascara to do the work. Unfortunately, I can never experiment with mascaras. I have a serious allergy to most of them, so when I find something that doesn't make me rub my eyes out, it becomes a permanent fixture in my make-up bag. DIORSHOW was my constant until the last time I bought a tube, Sephora gave me a sample of DIORSHOW Iconic Overcurl. After trying this 3 days, I returned my classic DS for the overcurl. It's a mascara on steroids. I could not believe the curl it gave my lashes! They look ten times longer. {and I haven't felt like I needed to use my Latisse} Like I said, there are good problems to have...

Vacay Anyone?

sporty cool: hat, bikini, cover-up, flops
tropical glam: hat, bikini, skirt, sandals

Are you going away for Spring Break? First of all, damn you. Second of all, sorry for that...can you take me with you? Last year around this time it was 75 degrees. This year it's 18 degrees. Last year I didn't go on vacation. This year I blog about what I would wear IF I was going on vacation. Still not going anywhere. Next year will be my year. Unless of course you've reconsidered and have decided to bring me as your travel companion. It could be worse...

I was definitely not in the market for a slouchy beanie while out shopping the other day. It was one of those impulse purchases that felt right in the store and once I got it home I thought, Who am I? This hat is sooooo not me. But it converts into an earwamer and is reversible so that's 3 uses for 1 item and for that I couldn't resist. So if you see me around town in my ultra cool beanie trying to be an ultra cool hipster, please just squash all my insecurities and throw me a "cool beanie, it's soooo you" bone. Thanks.

Sunny Disposition

dress up yellow

dress it down

Green had it's day yesterday. Today and this Spring, the color having a moment is yellow. InStyle's latest issue gives us a daffodil crash course and designers like DKNY, Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta all sent LYD's down the runway for their Sp/Sum '13 collections. If it doesn't make you yearn for some warm weather, then you have a problem and should be banished to live in the cold forever. Dress it up, play it casual or dare to try it head to toe. At least put a lemon in your water and walk around with it if you haven't got the balls to wear it.

“Why do people say "grow some balls"? Balls are weak and sensitive. If you wanna be tough, grow a vagina. Those things can take a pounding.”

Blog Spotlight: Penny Pincher Fashion

I recently had a blogger-coffee date with Kimberly who runs Penny Pincher Fashion. As an avid follower of her blog, I was more than excited to find her living in my own backyard! {Actually she lives in a house with her husband and children not located in my backyard but still very, very close to me} What I love most about PPF is that Kimberly showcases real clothes for real women. She never posts something she wouldn't wear in real life. Getting the real part of this yet? We chatted for what seemed like forever and then I put on a reporter hat and pulled out my list of questions. Here folks, is the real deal...

 photo IMG_3575-2.jpg

#1. When did you start blogging? Penny Pincher Fashion just celebrated it's two year anniversary in February.

#2. What made you start a blog? Friends and family encouraged me to share my love of attainable fashion ideas and deals.

#3. Your skin is AMAZING! What is your routine? My skin changed after the birth of my son. I went to my dermatologist who stripped me down to the basics. I use dove bar soap {really?!}, CeraVe moisturizer, a prescription product to even out skin tone and LaRoche-Posay eye cream.

#4. What type of camera do you use? A Canon Rebel T3 with a 55mm lens and zoom lens. Always scouting a deal, she recommends waiting for a day like Cyber Monday so you don't have to pay full price!

#5. Who takes your pictures? My husband.

#6. Any advice to someone who wants to start a blog? Pick a topic you are passionate about. Write about something true to your lifestyle. You will never see clothing that is high fashion on my blog because it's not realistic to what I wear. Be authentic. The blogging market is saturated but if you find your niche and do it well, it can eventually set you apart.

#7. Where are your favorite places to shop? J.Crew when they have a sale. H&M, Gap for jeans & pants. Anywhere I can find a deal.

#8. Any trends you are inspired by this season? Black and White. Florals. Pastels.

#9. Beauty product you can't live without? Smashbox primer.

#10. Project Runway or Fashion Star? Fashion Star because it's more accessible.

Runnin' on the Green

I think most people feel their best when they're exercising. {Little know fact: I actually have a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Physiology.} My exercise is running. I've been doing the annual St. Patrick's Runnin' On the Green here in Rochester for the past 10 years. It's a 5 mile race and it's amazing that just last year was my best time ever! I guess some things do get better with age. I used to have to train to do 5 miles and now my training is for half marathons {13.1 miles}. My third 1/2 is coming up on April 28th. My goal is for under 2 hours but that is a long shot! So I have to confess that I'm not in my 20's and I'm closer to 40, but I'm telling you this because I didn't start running until I was in my 30's! So if you are thinking that it is too late to get in shape or to try something new, you are completely WRONG! {no offense}

I just bought the Adidas Energy Boost sneaks from our local FleetFeet store. This shoe was just released February 27th in only 200 specialty shops across the US. What makes it so different? The foam in the sole is made of thousands of tiny capsules rather than a single sheet, like most traditional running shoes. That makes it bouncier and Adidas claims it saves energy with every step. I bought into it. But I must say, Adidas is my running shoe. I've been wearing the same Adidas shoe for 6 years. {not the same pair, but same design} I think what's most important when investing in a running shoe {these were $150} is the feel and comfort for you as an individual.

With the weather warming up, now's your time to get out there, get motivated and try something new to feel great about yourself! And let me know when and what you do. {I'm nosy like that}

Beauty Bites: Lip Stain

lip stains

To say I've been into bright lips lately is an understatement. My nudes and light pinks are being replaced by bright reds and hot pinks. But with all my talking at work, by 10 am I'm left with a bright red ring outlining my lips and nothing else if I try to wear lipstick. Enter in the lip stain...

I wanted a product that would give me long lasting color. I tried the Revlon Just Bitten in Gothic. It wasn't the perfect red for me but I liked the hydrating balm attached. I loved the Tarte Lipsurgence matte lip tint in Fiery. I wore it in these pics, here. The color was perfect for my skin tone and I love the matte look it gave, but it didn't last as long as I hoped and my lips dried out while wearing. I would have loved to combine the Revlon hydrating stick with the Tarte color to make one amazing product! The YSL I tried only once and it was a bit more glossy but definitely lasted. The color seemed like it would compliment most skin tones.

Has anyone else tried a lip stain they would recommend? I'd love to hear about it!

Want a great way to pull off day sequins? This cute little tee does the trick. Dress it up, down or with a tutu. Speaking of tutus...

Before I bought this skirt I asked myself: "Self, You do know that you're not a 5 year old in dance class, right? Do you really think you can pull off a tutu?" Of course the answers were yes and YES! I would highly recommend a tutu to anyone. Even if you just give it a twirl in the comfort of your home. It's bound to put a smile on your face. In fact, why not just borrow mine? Let's pass it around like Flat Stanley. And Boom! World Peace solved. The impact of fashion is huge.

Stop and Smell the Florals

I get one long stemmed yellow rose from my husband every year around the same time. That time is "Senior Night" for the Varsity Basketball team that he helps coach for. Every year I get scolded for letting it shrivel up on the counter, forgetting to put it in water. This year was different. I trimmed it and cared for it until it um...shriveled. And that's why I don't like flowers. They're just so needy

I'm not one who owns a lot of florals in my wardrobe, but these pieces are pretty and feminine. No water necessary. Now those are blooms I can totally handle.

This Weekend's Silver Lining

Last night I saw Silver Linings Playbook. I hadn't seen a movie in the theater in months, something I used to do weekly bk (before kids). So I was definitely in the mood to see something award worthy. I had purposely not listened to anything about the movie so I had no idea what it really was about, mental illness. It was amazing. I laughed, cried and didn't want it to end. There is a reason Jennifer Lawrence is the new "IT" girl. She's plain and simply put: real. Anyone watching the Oscars saw that. What I was even more in awe of was Bradley Cooper. No, not just because he's perfect looking and I secretly want to marry him in another life. It was by far his best performance to date. He was undeniabley believable as someone living with bipolar disorder. I wish that he had won some bigger accolades for this role. Your time will come Bradley Cooper!
