Boutique Crawlin'

Last night was the boutique crawl for Rochester Fashion Week. It was a wonderful night with so many amazing boutiques! I had fun sipping and shopping and gallivanting all over the city. Tonight is the show at the Armory with after party at new hot spot, Trata.

Aztec skies

I spotted this sweater in one of my favorite local boutiques, Thread. It's one of those versatile sweaters that reminds me of Fall. Football games, apple picking, weekend farmers markets...you can wear it for just about any casual occasion.  It's laid back cool and cozy too. I love the Aztec print; such a nod to living in New Mexico for three months of my life. Although I didn't spend a long time there, I will never forget my Dad dropping me off in the barbed wire surrounded apartment complex. And when the policemen informed us they were holding machine guns because of a "domestic abuse", I'm sure he couldn't have felt more confident that he was leaving his little Princess in a nice safe neighborhood to live on her own for the very first time. All that fun aside,  I've never seen Fall skies so blue like the ones in Albuquerque.

Wrinkles, Wrinkles, go away...

5 skin saving beauty items

I'm on a never-ending quest for new anti-aging products or advice on how to keep my skin looking younger and more vibrant. I'm deathly afraid of heights and starting my day without coffee but wrinkles are right on up there too. I don't have a ton of time to pamper and primp but these 5 tips are easy enough to follow on most days.

1. Exfoliation: Exfoliating dead skin cells unclogs pores and brightens skin. Overdoing it though with harsh scrubs can impair skin barrier function. Our skin barrier helps prevent bacteria from getting in and causing chronic inflammation. This can impair our skin's antioxidant defense and cause higher levels of free radicals which can lead to premature aging. I use a Clarisonic face brush for exfoliating. It's much gentler on skin by using sound-wave technology to loosen dirt.

2. Retinol: Retinoids is a phrase to describe all vitamin-A derivatives used in skin care. Retin-A is the prescription vitamin-A derivative tretinoin. It helps fight signs of aging by speeding up exfoliation, repairing skin on a molecular level and boosts new collagen production. (Collagen gives skin it's firmness and strength) I like to use a nightly retinol cream. Retinol is the most effective over the counter retinoid. Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so I use these sparingly in the summer months.

3. Lighten up: Uneven skin tone and pigmentation can age you more than wrinkles. Find a serum or cream with hydroquinone. Hydroquinone prevents the formation of new pigment and can lighten age spots, freckles or other skin discolorations. Try Garnier Skin Renew Clinical Dark Spot Corrector

4. Sunscreen: Wear daily sun protection year round. Make sure it protects against UVA and UVB rays. I use ComfortZone Resonance which not only contains daily SPF but doubles as my moisturizer as well. I've tried to be conscious of keeping my face out of the sun by wearing a hat and sunglasses whenever I know I'll be out during the most potent sun hours, or when I think the paparazzi might be trying to follow me. That's 10am-2pm, by the way.

5. Hydrate: Whenever something goes wrong in my life, I blame it on not drinking enough water. Hey~someone's gotta be the fall guy and water intake tends to affect everything, including skin appearance. Water hydrates cells and moves toxins out and nutrients in. Cut down on caffeine but don't think I'm telling you to stop drinking coffee. I would never do that to you.

If you run out of time or your eyes are crossing with all this information, try a beauty balm. These tinted face creams usually contain a moisturizer, SPF, anti-aging ingredients and make-up primer all in one. Some to try are Dr. Brandt Flexitone BB cream, Bobbi Brown BB cream Broad Spectrum SPF 35, or Too Faced Tinted BB SPF 20.

Interiors & Exteriors

Styles in fashion and interior design often overlap so I jumped at the chance when my friend, Rachel from Rachel Clark Designs suggested we mesh the two together in a photo shoot. Throw our photographer, Janice Mix in the eh...mix and Voila! You've heard the term "ultimate statement necklace" but how about ultimate statement dress? This one definitely fits that description. It has multiple seasonal trends yet doesn't look overdone. Tie neck top? check. Paisley? check. Pleats? check. Jewel tones? All together now...CHECK. Love the cranny tights to add a little punch, kinda like a funky lamp on a neutral desk. A perfect blend of class with an unexpected twist.

I've finally decided to embrace animal print this season.  I don't know why it took me so long. Maybe I was scarred by the wax coated leopard print pants I had ten years ago. Every time I think of them, the word tacky comes to mind. Badly done animal print can stand out for all the wrong reasons! But when I saw this cardigan, the word classy came to mind so I knew I was in business. It definitely elevates the look and can take it from day to night. My advice on animal print is to pair it with neutrals or more basic pieces and only incorporate one piece at a time. Just imagine a matching belt, clutch and shoes. What would the word be for that?...oh yeah, tacky. So let's all agree to keep the cheetah classy and the leopard luxe.

Gettin' Lippy

Wine red lips are a fun Fall beauty trend. I tried Butter London's Lippy lip gloss in La Moss. It looked ten times darker in the tube than on my lips (as you can see above). It came out slightly more of a berry color than the oxblood I was expecting. I lined and filled my lips with a Bobbi Brown lip pencil in "raisin" which also should have given it a darker tint. Overall though, I think it's the right shade for me! Cranberry is best for fairer complexions, merlot compliments more olive tones and eggplant is best for darker skin tones. But I think we can all agree that nothing looks worse than chapped flaky dark lips so I use my Clarisonic skin cleaner for a few seconds to exfoliate which preps my lips for a flawless finish. Bonus: it has a vanilla smell to it. Double bonus: matching nail polish. Mwah...

Long, Lovely Lashes

I feel as an Optometrist it is my professional obligation to talk to you about the amazing Latisse. In case you don't know, Latisse is a prescription eye drop that promotes growth and increases fullness of your eye lashes. Your lashes grow in a matter of weeks! This honestly works. How, you ask?  It's actually a smaller concentration of a medication used to treat the eye disease, glaucoma. Two side effects of glaucoma medications are: eyelash growth and changing your irises (colored part of eye) brown.  So the company took the better of the two and packaged it into a cosmetic prescription drug. Genius! It comes with a set of little paint brushes for you to apply onto the lashes, therefore avoiding eye color change. Unfortunately most insurance companies don't understand this really, truly is a medical necessity. So, it'll cost around 100 dollars for one bottle. Insiders tip: once you attain those luscious lashes, you can drop down to a maintenance dose and make that bottle last a lot longer. But don't take my word for it, just take a look at beauty Claire Danes.

Deals, Steals & a Faux Hawk

Dress: H&M, Necklace: Stella&Dot, Shoes: DV by Dolce Vita, Cuff: J.Crew, Earrings: Stella&Dot

When I saw this dress at H&M for 35 dollars, I was super excited. Didn't even try it on. When I got to the register and it rang up for 20 dollars, I started to tear up. What an amazing deal! I love the exposed zippers and I'm gravitating towards this neutral chai color for Fall. I think it will be a great transition piece too. I picture it over leggings with flats or tights and tall boots. After that, I went to a Stella&Dot open house. Their was a silent auction on items that had been discontinued and not one person bid on this necklace! Actually, one person did bid but then they scratched their name off the list. I'm talkin' a big bubbly doodle scratch back and forth, over and over so no one could even guess who they were. It was as if they were completely embarrassed to have bid on such a necklace! Hey...One woman's loss is another woman's gain, right? Best part...I got it for TEN dollars (originally $98). So if you do the math, the dress and necklace cost only 30 dollars. (My husband will be happy to read this) I found this great website for hair tips and tutorials. So here is my first faux hawk. It's a fun little something different to try. And I had to use my new OPI black cherry chutney nail polish and burgundy colored lips. Fun Fall fashion trends! I hope everyone has a safe and happy Labor Day!
